Almoosa Specialist Hospital successfully performed a complex surgery for a 57-year-old male citizen, who was suffering from severe pressure on the spinal cord as a result of a severe stenosis of the thoracic spine, thus the rapidly surgical intervention was required.
According to Dr. Husam Al Habib - Consultant in Complex Spine and Neurosurgery and the Head of Neuroscience Center at Almoosa Hospital Specialist - The patient came to Almoosa Hospital suffering from constant severe pain with numbness in the limbs, where he visited several other medical centers but they could not make the diagnosis.
Necessary exams and imaging have been made , which confirmed the presence of severe pressure on the spinal cord in the chest area, as a result of hypertrophied ligaments, which requires a rapidly surgical intervention in order to avoid paralysis at any moment, these cases have high percentage of paralysis preoperative and intraoperative because of the narrow canal and the pressure on the spinal cord.
Dr. Al Habib added that in such severe cases, patient could present with hemiplegia, partial or complete paralysis. He stressed also that the symptoms may significantly varied based on the severity of the spinal canal stenosis, but it often begins as a back pain.
The surgical treatment in such cases is considered the optimal and appropriate treatment especially in the cases that have a severe pressure on the spinal cord, which can affect muscles, sensation (feeling) or lower limbs in general.
Dr. Al Habib said the patient has already prepared for the surgery, which has done through the upper back (posterior) of the chest , where there is no need to open the chest from the front which it reduces complications, in addition to reducing the hospital stay, as well as that this type of surgery requires an expert and skilled doctors, besides having a well equipped place to conduct such surgeries, while the patient has left the hospital in the 3rd day of surgery.
